Some of the greatest American inventors are song writers. The artists in most cases are examples of people who have achieved their American dream, however, many have experienced numerous life challenges. Song writers are known to reflect on their hardships as a therapeutic method or an inspirational purpose. They provide a unique interpretation of American society and its pros and cons. The songs may reflect on actual or fictional accounts of people places and events. Many songs also expose the unfortunate situations that have arose in America that hinder certain groups or even the whole general public from pursing their American Dream. Despite the desire and importance to touch upon these sensitive topic, the songs always include a hint of American patriotism and hope. On the other hand, some American songs may be uplifting and celebrate the "human liberty" and inventive attitude of Americans and/or the country they live in.
This song is not a pro-American song, and is often misunderstood to be one. Many people think it is a song about American pride because the of its up-beat tune and the fact that people get hung up on the "I was born in the U.S.A" section of the lyrics. Closer examination of the lyrics will reveal that it is a story about a struggling Vietnam War veteran and his unfortunate life journey. The narrator reflects on his service and a saddening depiction of the tragic war is given. Although it is not a positive song about America, it it nonetheless still a song about America. The song reflects on the unpopular Vietnam War and the struggles Vietnam veterans faced when returning home. Some of the difficulties these soldiers faced when returning home include astronomically high unemployment, little or no government support, and very few opportunities for advancement. The underlying meaning of the lyrics is that sometimes people may become disillusioned with America and its mission and that the country as we know it is by no means perfect. Bruce Springsteen, despite providing solemn lyrics for the majority of the song, leaves the listener with one opportunistic line at the very end. The line is, "I am a cool rocking Daddy of the U.S.A." indicating that the narrator of the song may have been able to still mange to start a family and is or will be recognized for his service by his children.
In this song the artist James Brown talks about America being the land of the free where you can travel to different and and diverse cities that are connected through an extensive network of highways. Brown also mentions that everyone should have a goal or American Dream and if you don't have one you may be able to find your by traveling around the country. Lastly and perhaps most importantly he addresses the ethic diversity American possesses, and our ability to stand together as united nation despite our unique difference. I Love is upbeat song!
