The Fire in the Sky
The sun that blistered throughout the day,
Begins to lower, falling from the summer sky
Cabin night, on a boat I lay
Reflecting on, the two weeks that again passed by this early July
Relaxation, is the summer’s meditation
Belknap is my place to unwind
For leisure talk and play with my friends on vacation
A place to release all stresses that plague your mind
So many memories made under the pines
The moto is God first, the other fellow, second myself last
This, as well as the lamp of fortitude, will solve problems of all kinds
But here I am, time the only thing pushing me along fast.
I love the sunset, the summer too
And all those people who
Seek the Joy!
I set my eyes upon the my reflection disrupted by small ripples
Made by the boat which seems to have disrupted the old and exhausted great lake
I gaze upon the beautiful orange and reds cascaded upon the water
A beautiful sight to see
A blanket starts to cover the world around me in darkness
A tear rolls down my cheek from my sad eye
The night kisses me with coldness
I begin to paddle in, looking back but once to say “bye” with a heavy heart filled sigh
The sun that blistered throughout the day,
Begins to lower, falling from the summer sky
Cabin night, on a boat I lay
Reflecting on, the two weeks that again passed by this early July
Relaxation, is the summer’s meditation

The Four Lamps of Woodcraft
The Lamp of Fortitude 1. Be brave. Courage is the noblest of all attainments. 2. Be silent while your elders are speaking and otherwise show them deference. 3. Obey. Obedience is the first duty of the Woodcrafter. The Lamp of Truth 1. Word of honor is sacred. 2. Play fair. Foul play is treachery. 3. Be reverent. Worship the Great Spirit and respect all worship of Him by others. The Lamp of Beauty 1. Be clean – both yourself and the place you live in. 2. Understand and respect your body. It is the Temple of the Spirit. 3. Be friend of all harmless wildlife. Conserve the woods and flowers and especially be ready to fight wild fire in forest or in town. The Lamp of Love 1. Be kind. Do at least one act of unbargaining service each day. 2. Be helpful. Do your share of the work. 3. Be joyful. Seek the joy of being alive |
I wrote this poem about Camp Belknap, which is also referred to as "Camelot." I love camp Belknap for so many reasons. I am not going to write about every reason because it would take me years to explain my feelings thoroughly for this truly magical place I call home for two weeks every Summer in early July. And even then after explaining myself know one would genuinely know how special my experience has been at Belknap. A person can only understand if he went to Belknap and experince camp life first hand. Anyway, I added Camp Belknap for two very specific reasons. My first reason for placing it in this project was that a part of my incredibly diverse and maturing American Dream included becoming a Camp Leader and running camp actives with the cabin I would be looking after. However, this dream is largely out of my controlled because Belknap only hires from within. This means that I would have to be selected in a ceremony at the end of the session and undergo further evaluation to hopefully pass on and become an LC, than a LIT then finally a leader. The second reason for incorporating Belknap into my project was for the Four Lamps of Woodcraft, which I intend to use to guide me through life and to use while constructing my American Dream. I believe if I live by these basic life guidelines I will be happy no matter where I choose to go and no matter what I choose to do. Lastly, I will try to live my life by the camp motto; "God first, the other fellow second, myself last" in order to live a fulfilling life.
